Quality Factors

Origin

Origin means the location where the gemstone is mined. Since every location has different geological conditions, so the quality of a gemstone varies as per the origin. The quality can be in terms of color, transparency, treatment, inclusions etc. Primarily the three best origins of Ruby (Manik) are Burma, Thailand (Bangkok), and Africa (Mozambique or Tanzania). Indian Ruby is opaque and is not considered good for jewelry making.

  • Burmese Ruby: Known for its deep pigeon-blood red color, Burmese rubies are the most prized and command the highest prices. These are unheated and untreated. Burma Ruby is no longer available in market as the mines are closed. Some sellers do sell Burma Ruby but it is largely Thailand Rubies. Better get a lab certification done before buying them.
  • Bangkok Ruby: These rubies have a strong red hue but are generally less expensive than Burmese rubies. They are generally heated and treated and are widely used in Jewelry because of their lustre and affordable prices. Bangkok Rubies are generally avoided for astrological benefits.
  • African Ruby: Darker in color and more affordable, African rubies are a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers. These comes from Mozambique and Tanzania. Largely unheated and untreated rubies are from this location but quality is not good, however some parcels from Mozambique do have pigeon blood rubies which commands very high prices in market.

4Cs

  • Color: The most crucial factor, with deep, vivid red Ruby being the most desirable. The color spectrum of it ranges from vibrant red to pinkish red. Stones with saturated and medium tone command higher prices. Burmese pigeon blood red ruby stones are known for their stunning shade combined with glowing red fluorescence. Gems with color zoning are least preferred in market. There should be an equal distribution of primary color (red in these stones) throughout the gemstone.
  • Clarity: While inclusions are common, fewer inclusions increase the ruby’s value. Eye-clean clarity is important which determines the cost of the stone. It is rare to find gemstones with no or few inclusions. The original stone showcases inclusions known as needles.
  • Cut: A well-cut ruby enhances its brilliance and appearance. A precise amount of cut offers maximum color and brilliance to the gem. Manik stone looks beautiful in oval, round, marquise, brilliant-cut, and cushion mixed shapes.
  • Carat: Larger rubies are rarer and more valuable. The value of stones increases with their carat weight. Rubies with the rich color, eye-clean clarity, and high-carat weight demand the highest value.

Treatment

  • Heat Treatment: Commonly used to improve color and clarity, heat-treated rubies are less valuable than untreated ones.
  • Lead Glass Filling: This treatment enhances clarity but significantly reduces the stone’s value. Bangkok Rubies are famous for this.

How Origin and Treatment Affect Price

  • Origin: Burmese rubies are the most expensive, followed by Bangkok and African rubies.
  • Treatment: Unheated & Untreated rubies hold the highest value, while lead glass-filled rubies are the least valuable.
